About Patrick

Patrick M. Tarpey on the hills in his red tartan jacket — business coach at Magnitude.biz

Solved, not sold.
That's how I work. Always has been.

I'm Patrick. I'm 64, and I spend a good chunk of my time leading groups of young people across the hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom. I also work with small business owners who are stuck, struggling, or just working harder than they should be.

The two things aren't as different as they sound.

Out in the hills, conditions change fast. I make dynamic assessments — read the situation, decide, act. And I do it within strict safety guidelines, because there's no winging it when the weather turns and young people are depending on you.

Small businesses have their own version of that. The weather changes. The rules matter. And someone needs to see clearly when everything feels like noise.

That's the bit I do well.

Background

I've been a mass spectrometry test engineer, a Physics teacher for over thirty years, and I've run my own outdoor activity business for fifteen years. Every one of those jobs trained me to do the same thing — find the real problem, not the assumed one. Then fix it.

We all make assumptions about people. We all project how we think onto how we expect others to think. And of course I used to do it myself — blasting away with what I had to teach, assuming people were ready. They weren't always. The skill is reading the person first, then breaking things down into the right chunks for the right situation.

That's what I bring to your business.

But understanding your business is only half of it. The other half is understanding your customers.

PMMFS

Every customer who walks through your door has an invisible sticker on their forehead. It says PMMFS. Please Make Me Feel Special. They don't just want a good product or a fair price. They want to feel seen.

You can't just stick that on a motivational poster and call it done. It has to run through everything you do — how you answer the phone, how you write your emails, how you handle a complaint, how you say thank you.

That's what PMMFS really means. Not as a slogan. As a way of doing business.

Entrepreneurs Circle

I'm an Entrepreneurs Circle qualified coach. I work with small business owners across the UK. I act as a second pair of eyes — you tell me what's going on, I cut through the waffle and the noise to get to the root cause.

No magic beans. No rah-rah motivation. No one-size-fits-all programme.

Because if you've come through my door, I see you with that PMMFS sticker on your forehead. And I'll try my damnedest to make you feel seen, heard and understood.

Just Patrick. Doing what he always does.
